I’m a huge fan of saying “No.” I love time-blocking. I love protecting my time.
This is an incredibly defensive way of looking at things.
Sometimes I need it that way. As a recovering people-pleaser, I was addicted to saying, “Yes,” for years. I had to get very serious with myself about saying, “No,” so I could get used to it. So I could see that being respected is sometimes what you need. Not being liked.
But constantly playing defense with your time can also get exhausting. Especially if it goes against your very nature. What if your energy is high? What if it’s Autumn and you’re amped up, feeling in tune with all that change in the air?
What if you want to say, “Yes,” instead of “No?”
How will you stop other people’s agendas from taking over your life? How will you get any of the big things done?
Instead of blocking time, you create space. It’s a small but important shift in how to look at your precious days.
You MAKE ROOM for what you want.
When you buy a new couch, you don’t put it on top of your old couch. You take the old one out first. Goals are no different.
This is what I learned when I tried The Chalkboard Method from branding agency Braid Creative. It’s like a magic spell for goal-getting.
You think of what you want, specifically. What do you want to track over the next quarter? Do you want 10 customers? 100 social media followers? $1,000?
- Grab something big, and visual, like a chalkboard, whiteboard, or butcher paper.
- Draw spaces, actual empty blocks, representing what you want.
- Hang it up.
- You’ll fill in the boxes as you get what you want.
But don’t stop there. Open your calendar next. Create space here as well. Create appointments with yourself to work on these goals. Create the room you need.
Now you have the time on your calendar and the space on your wall, ready to be filled. Work your magic.
